Community outreach
Our faculty members are actively engaged in community outreach. Our mission is to disseminate the rich cultures of Latin America, Spain and Italy beyond the classroom. This includes theatre, music and radio programming, among other activities.
Drs. McBee and Russek attend Mosqoy's appreciation gathering
On Tuesday March 29 members of the Department were invited to a Donor Appreciation Gathering with Mosqoy's founder Ashli Akins, alumna of the Department. In attendance were two graduates visiting from Perú, Adrián Jiménez Suma and Lisbeth Mónica Chávez Monge. It was a lively event where Adrián played the traditional Andean flute and Lisbeth delivered an emotional speech. It took place at the home of Vicky Husband and Patrick Pothier, long-time supporters of Mosqoy. Check out the and their amazing work promoting education and preserving traditional weaving techniques in the Peruvian Andean region.
Dr. Restrepo-Gautier delivered a talk about Spanish explorer of the Northwest
Dr. Pablo Restrepo-Gautier gave a talk entitled "The Last Spaniard At Nootka: José Tobar y Tamariz Sails to the Pacific Northwest in 1796”. It took place on March 5, 2016 at "Nootka connections”, a conference organized by the Captain Cook Society, Victoria Chapter.
Great turnout at Victoria Film Festival for Argentine film
The Department co-sponsored Out last tango, an engaging documentary by German Krall about iconic tango dancers María Nieves Rego and Juan Carlos Copes. The show took place on Sunday February 14, 2016. Thanks to all who attended, and to the Victoria Film Festival for allowing us to participate in this community event.
