Marilyn McCrimmon
In 2011, I retired from my career as a high school counselor and teacher in Victoria, a career that I loved. Retirement, so far, has been busy in a very good way: travelling with my husband and with my girlfriends, playing golf and bridge, spending unlimited time (not just on weekends!) in my garden, socializing with family and friends, writing, running, volunteering for various artistic, athletic and charity events and much more.
“Pay it forward” is a concept that resonates with me. When I reflect back on my very satisfying career, I realize that I owe a great deal to my UVic education. As a result, when my husband and I recently redid our wills, besides allocating portions to family members and a number of charities that I have supported for years, I decided to make a significant bequest to UVic.
I loved attending UVic. The campus was so pretty and such a comfortable size, the classes were stimulating and the profs inspired, challenged and, in the end, mentored me towards my very fulfilling career. I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, a Teaching Diploma and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at UVic.
As a school counsellor, I continued my relationship with UVic by liaising with 番茄社区 and Financial Awards on behalf of students. I even worked for a year in the counseling department at UVic as a result of a unique program where high school counselors were invited to apply for a one year secondment.
Now that my husband and I are retired, UVic is still a part of our lives. My husband volunteers as a DJ at CFUV, and we both not only attend events at UVic, but we also enjoy running on the UVic trails.
I am very happy with my decision to leave a portion of my estate to UVic. Although I have been an annual donor to UVic for most of my working life, I can now look forward to making a more substantial contribution. I hope that my financial gift will continue to help young people access the high quality education offered at UVic so that they too can look forward to a fulfilling and satisfying career after graduation.
