Graduate Studies
Why choose civil engineering at UVic for your graduate program?
Our graduate programs focus on innovation for a sustainable world. We offer a research-intensive, interdisciplinary, and sustainability-focused Masters of Applied Science (MASc) and PhD degree in Civil Engineering. Research-intensive means the emphasis is always on world-class research (with a low number of required courses). Interdisciplinary means that we reach across Civil Engineering and beyond to focus projects from multiple perspectives. Sustainability-focused means that we are training the next generation of engineers, scientists and policy makers focused on pressing societal and environmental problems and solutions.
To encourage the interdisciplinary and sustainability focus, we organize our department and graduate programs around timely green civil engineering themes: Green structures & materials; Smart buildings, infrastructures & cities; Industrial ecology; and Sustainable water. Our programs are the ideal preparation for a career in academia or other research organizations as well as industry and government.
We have professors that have won both teaching and research awards, and actively interact with industry, government and non-governmental organizations to maximize the impact of our research locally and internationally. Our minimum funding policy is in place to support your success throughout the program. We also offer supplements for scholarship-holding students.
The first step of the application process is to contact a professor with an email clearly describing why you want to be in our program and why you are a good fit (not a generic email please!). Applicants need a supervisor in order to gain acceptance into our MASc program.
