Building and floor emergency coordinator training

Are you part of your building's evacuation team? Are you a Building or Floor Emergency Coordinator in your building? This training is for you! Attend and learn more about your role as a Building or Floor Emergency Coordinator. These sessions are open to all BEC's and FEC's.

Fire extinguisher training

Are you a Building or Floor Emergency Coordinator? Attend a fire extinguisher training session and learn how you can respond if you encounter a small fire.

Emergency preparedness workshops

Emergencies happen! Do you know what to do to be prepared for earthquake, tsunami or other disrupting emergencies? Attend this session and learn more about how you can be prepared when disaster strikes.

Active threat

An active threat is an emergency event in which an individual with a weapon poses an immediate danger to safety on campus. Learn what steps you can take during an active threat to protect you and those around you.

Fire drills 2024

Fire drills in 2024 will be held in-person.

Remember, as soon as you hear fire bells sounding in the building immediately evacuate and encourage others to follow.

 


The Great British Columbia ShakeOut

Join us - participate in the next ShakeOut in 2024!

The next Great British Columbia ShakeOut will take place on October 17 at 10:17 a.m. Hundreds of thousands of people in British Columbia are expected to participate and take action to become better prepared for earthquakes. They join millions who are participating from around the world!

Did you know that the Victoria region has a 1 in 3 likelihood of a damaging earthquake occurring in our lifetime? Given this high probability do you know what to do to prepare for an earthquake?

The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is a great way to raise awareness about the earthquake risk and steps each person can take to become better prepared.

Actions you can take

Make a difference – do these two things:

  1. Hold an earthquake drill in your area.
  2. Encourage people to be prepared for earthquakes and other disrupting emergencies

Hold an earthquake drill

Hold a Drop, Cover and Hold On drill in your classroom, lab, office or other location on campus. It is not hard and only takes a few minutes. Here are some resources to help:

Can’t hold a drill at 10:17 a.m. on October 17, 2024? Simply hold it with your group at a different time that week. Each instructor or leader can decide whether to hold a drill in their area and when.

When you hold your drill share it on social media and send your photos to robertjohns@uvic.ca so we can see your participation!

Encourage preparedness

Emergency preparedness starts with everyone. Encourage people to:

  • Have a plan
  • Build an emergency kit
  • Create grab and go bags
  • Secure your home or workplace
  • Consider earthquake insurance
