A global impact ranking released today by Times Higher Education (THE) evaluating universities鈥 global contributions towards meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) puts UVic among the world鈥檚 top tier of leaders in climate action, and among the world鈥檚 top 100 institutions overall in contributing to a sustainable future for the planet. THE ranked UVic fourth among the world鈥檚 universities for climate action鈥攎eaning research and action taken to understand and respond to the global challenge of climate change.

UVic donates hand sanitizer

UVic has delivered more than 200 litres of hand sanitizer鈥攅nough for about 65,000 single doses鈥攆or use by Island Health, whose front-line workers are in the thick of responding to the health crisis. UVic chemist David Leitch led the effort to plan and execute a manufacturing campaign consistent with stringent Health Canada standards, using supplies already on hand.

UVic health informatics graduate student Amr Farghali has developed a tool to help visualize vast amounts of patient data鈥攊mproving the speed and accuracy of cancer diagnosis. 鈥淭he human brain interprets visual images faster than text,鈥 says Farghali, who works full-time as a senior pharmacist. Farghali decided to redirect his medical science career to where the need was greatest: providing cancer specialists with faster, more efficient screening methods.

State of mindfulness

More than 112,000 people have so far enrolled in the massive open online course (MOOC).
