Program requirements

We offer an MA in French and Francophone Studies, comprising a minimum of 15 units of graduate credit. Students may choose:

  • a project-based option, or
  • a thesis option (with the possibility of a concentration in Cultural, Social & Political Thought)

Program Requirements

Students must complete 15 units of course. Each course is worth 1.5 units

  1. FRAN 500A (1.5 units) and FRAN 500B (1.5 units)

  2. 7.5 units of course work, of which a minimum of 6.0 units must be at the graduate level, including up to 1.5 units taken outside the department. Up to 1.5 units may be taken at the senior undergraduate level within the Department of French and Francophone Studies;

  3. FRAN 598 (4.5 units) - Major Research Project

Note

FRAN 598 consists of a project (40 to 50 pages) and an oral defence. The project and thesis proposal describing the topic selected by the candidate must have the approval of both the Supervisory Committee and the Graduate Studies Committee.

Note

  • FRAN 599 consists of a thesis (normally 80 to 100 pages) and an oral defence. The project and thesis proposal describing the topic selected by the candidate must have the approval of both the Supervisory Committee and the Graduate Studies Committee. Students in FRAN 599 must defend their proposal. Any substantial change from the approved topic which the candidate may wish to make in the course of their research must be approved.

Concentration In Cultural, Social And Political Thought (CSPT)

Admission Requirements

Students must meet the core graduating requirements of the individual departments as well as specific requirements of the CSPT program.


Program Requirements

Students wishing to pursue a Master's with a CSPT concentration have the possibility of doing a thesis or a project, as follows:

CSPT concentration, thesis option

  • Complete all of the following
    • Complete all of:
      • FRAN500A - Introduction to Theory and Research Methods (1.5)
      • FRAN599 - Thesis (7.5)
      • CSPT501 - Contemporary Cultural Social and Political Thought I (1.5)
    • Complete 1.5 units from:
      • CSPT500 - Topics in Cultural, Social and Political Thought (1.5)
      • CSPT590 - Directed Readings (1.5 - 3)
    • Complete 3 units of:
      additional FRAN courses at the graduate level.
CSPT concentration, project option
  • Complete all of the following
    • Complete all of:
      • FRAN500A - Introduction to Theory and Research Methods (1.5)
      • FRAN598 - Major Research Project (4.5)
      • CSPT501 - Contemporary Cultural Social and Political Thought I (1.5)
    • Complete 1.5 units from:
      • CSPT500 - Topics in Cultural, Social and Political Thought (1.5)
      • CSPT590 - Directed Readings (1.5 - 3)
    • Complete 6 units of:
      additional FRAN courses at the graduate level.

Composition of Supervisory Committee

The supervisor(s) and members of CSPT students’ supervisory committees are normally CSPT-affiliated faculty. The supervisor will be from the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Note

The thesis or project topic must be within the field of cultural, social, and political thought and must be written in French.
