Dr. Kuchar won the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies and University Microfilm Institute Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2003 and the Montaigne Prize from the Canadian Society of Renaissance Studies in 2022. ENSH 355: John Milton: Major Poetry and Selected Prose
John Milton is a major figure in world literature and a defining figure of the European Renaissance. In this course, we will learn why he has had such an enormous impact on centuries of writers, thinkers, and artists. Focusing primarily on Paradise Lost, we will learn to read Milton in his literary, religious, and cultural contexts. These contexts include virtually the whole scope of Western culture from its beginnings in Classical myth and philosophy, to the Christian Bible, through to the modern sciences of astronomy and political theory. In doing so, we will also attend closely to Milton’s artistry, to the formal qualities of his poetic, narrative, and rhetorical styles. Consideration of Milton's ongoing influence on world culture, from the Inklings to the Arab Spring, will also be woven into our discussion. In this class, Paradise Lost is not a monument to dead ideas but a living force with the power to clarify and maybe even change minds and hearts (though in what direction is not something that can be predicted in advance).

Shakespeare and the World of 'Slings & Arrows'

Slings & Arrows, starring Susan Coyne, Paul Gross, Don McKellar, and Mark McKinney as members of the New Burbage Theatre Festival, was heralded by television critics as one of the best shows ever produced and one of the finest depictions of life in classical theatre. Shakespeare scholars, however, have been ambivalent about the series, at times even hostile. In Shakespeare and the World of "Slings & Arrows" Gary Kuchar situates the three-season series in its cultural and intellectual contexts. More than a roman à clef about Canada's Stratford Festival, he shows, it is a privileged window onto major debates within Shakespeare studies and a drama that raises vital questions about the role of the arts in society. Kuchar reads the television show - ever fluctuating between faith and doubt in the power of drama - as an allegory of Peter Brook's widely celebrated account of modern theatre, The Empty Space, mirroring Brook's distinction between holy theatre, a quasi-sacred vocation, and deadly theatre, a momentary entertainment. Combining contextualized interpretations of the series with subtle formalist readings, Kuchar explains how Slings & Arrows participates in a broader recuperation of humanist approaches to Shakespeare in contemporary scholarship. The result is a demonstration of how and why Shakespeare continues to provide not just entertainment, but equipment for living.
George Herbert and the Mystery of the Word

This book presents a historically and critically nuanced study of George Herbert's biblical poetics. Situating Herbert's work in the context of shifting ideas of biblical mystery, Gary Kuchar shows how Herbert negotiated two competing impulses within post-reformation thought—two contrary aspects of reformation spirituality as he inherited it: the impulse to certainty, assurance, and security and the impulse to mystery, wonder, and wise ignorance. Through subtle and richly contextualized readings, Kuchar places Herbert within a trans-historical tradition of biblical interpretation while also locating him firmly within the context of the early Stuart church. The result is a wide ranging book that is sure to be of interest to students and scholars across several different fields, including seventeenth-century studies, poetry and the bible, and literature and theology.
The Poetry of Religious Sorrow in Early Modern England

In early modern England, religious sorrow was seen as a form of spiritual dialogue between the soul and God, expressing how divine grace operates at the level of human emotion. Through close readings of both Protestant and Catholic poetry, Kuchar explains how the discourses of "devout melancholy" helped generate some of the most engaging religious verse of the period. From Robert Southwell to John Milton, from Aemilia Lanyer to John Donne, the language of "holy mourning" informed how poets represented the most intimate and enigmatic aspects of faith as lived experience. In turn, "holy mourning" served as a way of registering some of the most pressing theological issues of the day. By tracing poetic representations of religious sorrow from Crashaw's devotional verse to Shakespeare's weeping kings, Kuchar expands our understanding of the interconnections between poetry, theology, and emotion in post-Reformation England.
Divine Subjection: The Rhetoric of Sacramental Devotion in Early Modern England

Combining theoretically engaged analyses with historically contextualized close readings, Divine Subjection posits new ways of understanding the relations between devotional literature and post-reformation English culture. Shifting the critical discussion from a "poetics" to a "rhetoric" of devotion, Kuchar considers how a broad range of devotional and meta-devotional texts in Catholic and mainstream Protestant traditions register and seek to mitigate processes of desacralization -- the loss of legible commerce between heavenly and earthly orders. This shift in critical focus makes clear the extent to which early modern devotional writing engages with some of the period's most decisive theological conflicts and metaphysical crises.
