I joined UVic’s ATWP in July 2021. When I’m teaching, I take a student-centred approach that emphasizes active learning, small- and large-group discussion, and peer-review and revision. My goal is to equip students with the confidence and skills to meaningfully take part in scholarly conversations occurring across disciplines, think critically, and feel like they belong in a university setting.

I have two areas of research that inform my teaching: the rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine, and writing studies.  I’m interested in how language shapes understandings and experiences of health and illness and participates in the production of scientific and medical knowledge. This research informs my teaching of ATWP 305: The Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, currently the only upper-level rhetoric course at UVic. My current project is a rhetorical history of Lyme disease in Canada. My research has been published in journals such as Health, BMJ Medical Humanities, and The Journal of Medical Humanities.

My writing studies research has focused on fostering belonging in the classroom and informs my approach to teaching ATWP 135. My research has been published in The Conversation and Discourse and Writing/Rédactologie, including a special issue for Academic Writing in Canada. My current projects include SSHRC-funded Writing and Power: Positions and Policies for Social Change, led by Dr. Sara Humphreys, and a study of how to foster belonging in UVic Libraries by encouraging students to utilize existing institutional resources.
