Credentials
MA and PhD (Maryland)
Area of expertise
Academic Writing, Writing Program Administration, Rhetoric, Early Modern English drama
While her published research focuses mostly on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English literature, like like many early modernists Dr. Kelly is fascinated by rhetoric, the art of persuasive speech and writing that served as the foundation for renaissance education. She draws upon classical, early modern, and contemporary rhetorical and composition theory when developing instructional materials and designing curriculum for AWR-designated courses in the Academic and Technical Writing Program.
Since coming to UVic in 2009, she has helped students develop their writing skills not just in ENGL/ATWP 135 (Academic Reading and Writing) and ENGL 146 (The Literature of our Era) but also in upper level classes for English majors and graduate students. She has particularly enjoyed training graduate students to offer effective writing instruction in ENGL 502 (Teaching Literature and Composition).
As Director of the Academic and Technical Writing Program, Dr. Kelly currently has responsibility for overseeing the following courses:
- ATWP 101: Foundations of Academic Literacy
- ATWP 135: Academic Reading and Writing
- ENGR 110: Design and Communication 1
- ENGR 120: Design and Communication 2
- ENGR 240: Technical Writing
Dr. Kelly has a particular fascination with the history of documentation styles (as evidenced by this review of the most recent version of the MLA handbook: ). She is also interested in helping students understand the importance of academic integrity. (She even bought a paper from an essay mill to understand how those services target and cheat students: .) One of her current projects is working as part of a team at UVic developing an Open Educational Resources textbook focused on academic writing in Canada.
