Your audition may be recorded in one take, or you can submit individual files for each piece, whichever you prefer. The recording(s) should include both video and audio, and be uploaded to YouTube or the hosting site of your choice. The link can be included with the application for audition or forwarded to musicadmin@uvic.ca.

Application essay

You’ll see that the Application for Audition includes an essay section. The essay is intended to be a short (500 words or less) introduction of yourself, your musical experience and interests, and your future goals. Applicants are free to include any information they wish; topics of interest to the admissions committee include the major area(s) you are considering, the various styles and genres of music you enjoy playing and listening to, and your interests outside of music.

Letters of reference

We require two letters of reference as part of the application to the Bachelor of Music program. These letters should be from referees who are familiar with your musical background and experience, i.e. private teacher, band/orchestra/choir director, musical collaborators, etc. If you are not able to provide two  ‘music’ references, one letter may be form another source, i.e. high school teacher or employer.

Reference letters can be attached to your application within your application portal, or emailed directly to musicadmin@uvic.ca. Deadline to receive reference letters is 15 February.

Audition interview

An optional short (10-15mins) interview with the Director of the School of Music is available to applicants who are interested. This informal conversation is an opportunity to learn more about the School and about UVic, and to ask any questions you might have. Applicants who are performing live auditions will be able to sign up for an interview slot on their audition day. Those submitting recordings can request a Zoom interview.

Theory requirements

UVic does not have specific theory requirements for audition, though completion of the  will enhance your success in the theory courses at UVic.

Upon admission, all incoming students (except those with transfer credit for a course equivalent to MUS 111 or MUS 101A) complete a 25-minute online Music Theory Placement test comprised to 10 rudiments questions. Test scores are used to determine the most appropriate theory class for each student in their first term of study.

An optional exemption/placement test will be available prior to the start of classes for students with advanced theory skills to determine whether a student can advance to second year theory.

Transfer students

UVic welcomes applications from transfer students. Note that transfer credit is assessed on a course-by-course basis. There is no direct transfer for Individual Tuition (lessons), your lesson level at UVic is determined by audition. UVic does not formally assess transfer credit until students are admitted, but information about direct-transfer courses can be found on the . Specific questions can also be sent to musicadmin@uvic.ca.
