Harold Kalman is a heritage planner and architectural historian living in Victoria, British Columbia. Born in Montréal, he was educated in the history of art and architecture at Princeton University (AB 1964, MFA 1966, PhD 1971) and received his LLD (honoris causa) from the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø (2010). He recently withdrew from an active international consultancy in heritage conservation after 35 years in practice, during which time he participated in many hundreds of projects. He now divides his work time between writing and teaching.
Kalman is the author of many books and articles for both professional and general readers. The books include Heritage Planning: Principles and Process (Routledge, 2014, 2nd ed. in preparation), A History of Canadian Architecture (2 vols, Oxford University Press, 1994); Exploring Vancouver, now in its fourth edition; and Exploring Ottawa (University of Toronto Press, 1983).
Recent articles include ‘“Chinese spirit in modern strength”: Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, and early modernist architecture in China,’ in Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong (2018), ‘Eric Arthur and the introduction of modernism to Canada,’ in Architecture Canada (2017), and ‘Destruction, Mitigation, and Reconciliation of Cultural Heritage,’ in International Journal of Heritage Studies (2017).
Kalman is Adjunct Associate Professor of Art History & Visual Studies at the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø and Honourary Professor of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. He is engaged in heritage advocacy and sits on the Victoria Heritage Advisory Panel. He was the founding president of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP) and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2012.
