Graduate programs
The Department of Curriculum & Instruction offers a range of graduate programs at the Masters and Doctoral levels to serve professional and scholarly interests and needs. Our internationally recognized Faculty members have deep and varied expertise in education, teaching, and learning - including educational policy, practice, and theory. Additionally, the Department of Curriculum & Instruction offers graduate student oppportunites for research assistantships and teaching.
Our department provides both full and part-time programs; these are variously offered face-to-face and in an online format. We offer graduate degrees in the following areas:
M.Ed. model (2 years):
PROFESSIONAL DEGREE COHORTS (LINK to schedule) – add images
- Coursework intended to provide foundational knowledge in the focus area of the cohort
- Professional project intended to reach a professional audience as well as meet Graduate Studies and departmental requirements
- Cohorts offered in two or three year cycles, depending on demand
* proposal for cohorts from professional communities will be considered
- 7 courses
- Project (literature review, project development, presentation)

Required courses: EDCI 514; EDCI 581
Elective courses: (3 courses, selected in consultation with supervisor)
Winter – one (PT) or two (FT) courses
Spring/Summer – final course; beginning proposal
Fall/Winter – thesis completion
PhD model (full or part time)
- Coursework provides foundational knowledge enabling a focus on research in specific areas
- Offered every year
Begins September –one (PT) or two (FT) courses
Required courses: EDCI 614; EDCI 681
Elective courses: (2 courses, selected in consultation with supervisor)
Winter – one (PT) or two (FT) courses
Spring/Summer – preparation for and completion of candidacy
Fall – completion of candidacy; begin proposal
Winter – completion of proposal and ethics
Spring/Summer – begin data collection
Fall/Winter – continue data collection; begin writing dissertation
Spring/Summer – continue until completed

Application to any of these degrees is through the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Please note: Graduate degrees in Education (M.Ed, MA, PhD) do not qualify graduates to teach in Canadian K-12 Schools. Teacher certification is handled by a government department separate from the Faculty of Education.
