Annual Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health Scholarships and Travel Awards
A scholarship can be the deciding factor in the decision to pursue graduate education or in selecting which university to attend. The opportunity to work with world class researchers is also a deciding factor. Alice-Lou Poy Scholarship
The Alice Lou-Poy Graduate Scholarship was created by former UVic Chancellor Ronald Lou-Poy in memory of his mother. The scholarship is a gift from the community and the Lou-Poy family.
The Alice Lou-Poy Graduate Scholarship will be awarded to up to two outstanding graduate students conducting research on Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Dr. David Chuenyan Lai Scholarship
Dr. David Chuenyan Lai was Professor Emeritus of Geography and an Adjunct Professor in Pacific and Asian studies at UVic. He was also an Adjunct Professor in the David Lam Centre for International Communication at Simon Fraser University. He was a well-known promoter of multiculturalism and was a member of British Columbia’s Multicultural Advisory Committee for several years.
The Dr. David Chuenyan Lai Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding graduate student doing research on aging.

Elaine Gallagher Award
Dr. Elaine Gallagher was the third Director of the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health (formerly the Centre on Aging). She is a Professor Emeritus in the UVic School of Nursing, and held an adjunct appointment in the Gerontology Program at Simon Fraser University.
During her career, much of Dr. Gallagher’s research focused on understanding the causes of falls among older adults and preventing them. Her research in the area of injury and falls prevention raised awareness of, and interest in, the reduction of morbidity and mortality due to falls at the local, regional, provincial and national levels.
The Elaine Gallagher Award will be provided to up to two outstanding graduate students doing research on aging who will be presenting a paper or poster at a conference on aging.

Neena L. Chappell Scholarship
Dr. Neena Chappell is Professor Emeritus at the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health and the Department of Sociology. For more than 30 years, her research focused on three areas: quality of life for seniors, caregiving, and the health care system and related policy. Throughout her career, Dr. Chappell argued for recognition of the positive aspects of aging as well as problems and challenges associated with growing older. Her research on quality of life for seniors led the way in debunking myths about seniors as frail, lonely individuals and demonstrated that most seniors maintain their independence within active social networks.
The Neena Chappell Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding graduate student doing research on aging.

UVRA Award
The mandate of the 番茄社区 Retirees Association (UVRA) is to further retirees’ social, intellectual, and cultural wellness, and to create opportunities to extend their relationship with the 番茄社区. The UVRA and IALH share several goals including improving the wellness of the older population and supporting research regarding the needs and experiences of older individuals. The UVRA award reflects these joint aims and is intended to provide encouragement to graduate students at a crucial stage in their careers.
The UVic Retirees Association Award will be awarded to up to two outstanding graduate students whose research focuses on individuals 55 years of age and older.

Eldercare Foundation Research Awards

3M National Student Fellowship for Undergraduate Students
The award is open to undergraduate students who are enrolled full time in a post-secondary Canadian institution, have completed at least one full semester of study at the time of nomination, and have not previously received a 3M student fellowship. Call for nominations (PDF) will be posted in Fall 2024. UVic deadline for nominations will also be annouced in Fall 2024.
