Recommendations will be presented to the campus Integrated Planning Committee this spring. In a post-secondary environment where enhancing the quality of academic programs is critical, it is more important than ever to align the university鈥檚 resources with its priorities. A working group has been struck to research and recommend enhanced planning tools that will support UVic decision-makers in academic and service units in reaching that goal.

The celebration of this year's President鈥檚 Distinguished Service Award recipients, hosted by President Jamie Cassels, took place on Feb. 20 at the University Club. Reeta Tremblay, UVic鈥檚 vice-president academic and provost, and Kane Kilbey, associate vice-president human resources, made presentations before the announcement of this year鈥檚 recipients.

Theresa Dickinson has been appointed as the new general manager of UVic鈥檚 Swans Suite Hotel and Brewpub. She joins UVic Properties on Feb. 24, 2014 and will be responsible for providing effective leadership and direction for the operational and fina鈥�

Nominations for the 2013 UVic Student and Staff Sustainability Champion Awards are now open. If you know a student or staff member who has done an outstanding job over the past year promoting sustainability on campus, consider nominating him or her for this fabulous opportunity to be recognized.

In 1973, Peter Klit and Grant Hughes were assigned the same UVic dorm room鈥擠avid Thompson 209. They quickly bonded, beginning a friendship now in its 40th year. It鈥檚 only coincidence they both currently work on campus. (A happy excuse to catch-up more often, they say.)

It's 12:15 on a Wednesday, and I'm sitting in a small room in the Interfaith Chapel with about 15 various staff members. We're about to spend the next 20 minutes sitting in complete silence, but not as a protest or some kind of exercise: it's simply鈥�

Did you know that there鈥檚 a team of people here at UVic ready and willing to answer any computer questions you might have? It鈥檚 the Computer Help Desk, led by manager Marcus Greenshields.

A day in the life of Jennifer Lang is as full of scene changes and costume changes as any opera. On a typical weekday, she鈥檚 up at 6 a.m. for yoga; then it鈥檚 four hours as administrative assistant for UVic鈥檚 Web Initiatives Team in UVic Communications. After an hour of singing practice and music preparation, she teaches voice students at the Peninsula Academy of Music Arts or Long and McQuade. And one evening a week, she tops it all off with a karate class (she holds a black belt).

Heather Richards might not be a name you recognize, but if you鈥檝e been to a 50th anniversary event at UVic, you鈥檝e seen her handiwork. For the past two years, Heather has been a constant force behind the celebrations. 鈥淚鈥檓 really passionate about UVic,鈥� says Heather. Considering what she鈥檚 accomplished in the past few years, it鈥檚 no wonder why.

Not every reader will recognize him from his picture, but since February 2007, each issue of UVic鈥檚 community newspaper has benefited from Robie Liscomb鈥檚 discriminating touch. After more than 1,200 days in the life of The Ring, its editor retired at the end of April.

All university employees are encouraged to participate in a consultation about employment equity at UVic by completing a brief online survey. UVic has retained a team of external consultants to conduct a review to ensure the university鈥檚 employment practices are fair and equitable and further our strategic plan goals. Faculty and staff can complete the online survey by April 26. While UVic is home to countless people who help make our campus more sustainable, a few stand out in the way they make a difference and inspire others. Josephson is one of those people, and the second UVic employee to receive this peer-nominated annual award.
