There is no question Sean Adams has made his mark on UVic: much of the world-renowned scientific research conducted on campus over the last two decades was produced with the help of instruments he created. Adams is a scientific glass blower in the Faculty of Science. He creates highly specialized glassworks for use in scientific experiments鈥攖he sorts of one-off things you鈥檇 never be able get from a commercial or industrial glass producer. 鈥淩esearchers here are often creating new science for which equipment does not yet exist,鈥� he explains. 鈥淭hey come to me with very specific needs and I work with them to design or modify equipment for their specific purposes.鈥�

The 番茄社区's Board of Governors announced today that Dr. Valerie Kuehne, an exceptional academic and institutional leader and a dedicated member of the UVic community for 25 years, is the university's new Vice-President Academic and Provost, effective July 1, 2015 for a five-year term. The Computer Help Desk has expanded its operations to provide more knowledgeable staff, extended hours and twice the number of locations. Faculty, staff and students can now contact the Help Desk by telephone and email from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on stat holidays; and visit any one of eight physical locations.

The Campus Checklist is a brief campus news digest delivered biweekly to all UVic faculty and staff via their university-supplied email. Our goal is to strengthen communications between faculty and staff in different areas, support UVic's culture of respect, inclusion and collaboration, build a sense of shared enterprise and improve campus communications. It鈥檚 time to wave a final farewell to the uHire job posting system as Human Resources gears up to welcome UVic Careers, the new online job management system that will go live in Sept. 2014. Beginning Sept. 8, the UVic Careers system will be the recruitment tool for CUPE 951, CUPE 917, Exempt Support, Management Excluded and PEA positions.

On Tuesday, April 29 at noon, join UVic President Jamie Cassels for his next President鈥檚 Run, celebrating the end of the academic year and the return of warm weather.

The idea is simple: teach children about the importance of connecting to nature when they鈥檙e young, and they鈥檒l grow into environmental leaders. On March 16, Sherri-Lynn Yazbeck and her team at UVic Child Care Services were awarded the 2014 Staff Sustainability Champion Award for their environmental engagement programs. The award was presented by UVic Vice-President Finance and Operations Gayle Gorrill. Yazbeck and her team of educators鈥擝atool Alishan, Ann Pickup and Julia Wilson鈥攑rovide nature-based learning for children aged 3-5. They promote hands-on learning for issues related to the environment and teach children the importance of environmental stewardship.
