Victoria's Bell Jar

October 26, 2016 - The Ring

UVic Libraries has acquired a rare print edition of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and revealed this one-of-a-kind volume on Oct. 26 in time for a lecture at UVic on Plath's birthdate, Oct. 27. This unique volume features original sketches added by hand by Plath's own daughter, the artist and writer Frieda Hughes.

2016 United Way campaign kickoff

The 2016 UVic United Way Greater Victoria (UWGV) annual campaign officially kicked off on Sept. 29. This year, UWGV is focusing on the people who have the power to change lives with each contribution they make. In support of this, the UVic 2016 fundraising goal is $275,000, including the pivotal fundraising efforts of the UVic Retirees Association (UVRA).

BC sculptor celebrates scholarship with new endowment

September 29, 2016 - The Ring

Art History and Visual Studies is now home to the largest donor-funded endowed award on campus, thanks to a major gift from BC sculptor Jeffrey Rubinoff and the Jeffrey Rubinoff Foundation. The Jeffrey Rubinoff Scholar in Art as a Source of Knowledge Endowment establishes a recurring four-year PhD fellowship in the area of modern and contemporary art history, allowing doctoral students exceptional opportunities to study the complexities and richness of modern and contemporary art history.

Foundation increases support for students, sustainability

September 6, 2016 - The Ring

At its August meeting, the UVic Foundation approved a record $14.5-million budget to support students and the university鈥檚 2016-17 academic mission鈥攁n increase of $600,000 from last year. The foundation also created a pilot Fossil-Fuel-Free Fund for donors who wish to create new endowments that will not be invested in companies with coal, oil or natural gas reserves.

UVic biochemistry student wins national fellowship

A UVic biochemistry student known for his passion for philanthropy and science has won one of Canada's most prestigious awards for outstanding leadership. As one of 10 3M National Student Fellows across Canada, Paul Junhyuck Kim receives a cash award and is invited to attend the annual conference for the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

UVic's Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) has had an overwhelming amount of recreation usage and community support since it opened in May 2015. Barely one month into 2016, Vikes Athletics and Recreation are pleased to announce three partnerships in the new naming of CARSA's RBC Blue and Gold Room, the UVic Alumni Association Spirit Section and the Ian and Gillian Stewart Varsity Weight Room.
