Indigenous high school students experience STEM research at UVic

Lysozymes. Particle physics. Virtual reality. Drone technology. Black holes. These are a few of the science and technology topics that 10 Indigenous high school students delved into during a week-long STEM residency at the 番茄社区 from May 27-31. The grade 11 students鈥攏ine from BC and one from Saskatchewan鈥攚ere mentored by UVic professors and grad students over five eventful days on campus.

Web of support fosters new leadership in inclusive education

For Dominique Rochefort, a citizen of the M茅tis Nation, the journey to become an empowered teacher was mined with self-doubts and life challenges. Rochefort graduates with a UVic BEd in elementary teacher education鈥攁nd will receive a Maxwell Cameron award from the BC Teachers鈥 Federation for the outstanding quality of her practice teaching, her top GPA and engagement in social justice.

UVic surpassed its fundraising goal by $3 million this year, raising $18.9 million from 4,795 donors. The funds increased the number of students supported by donor-funding by 2 percent with 89 new awards.

Student Ambassadors donate $2,000 to help students in financial need

April 11, 2019 - The Ring

Using profits from selling flowers and frames at convocation, this year's cohort of Student Ambassadors is donating $1,000 to the Student Emergency Fund, which supports students who are in financial crises and need immediate assistance. An anonymous alumni donor surprised the group鈥攎atching their contribution to the Student Emergency Fund this year, making their total gift $2,000.

UVic Sports Hall of Fame for 2019

Joining the UVic Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 are Lori Clarke, a two-time women's basketball national champion; Sara Brant Ballantyne, a member of the inaugural national championship-winning women鈥檚 field hockey team; and Michael Holmes, an outstanding contributor and champion for Vikes rugby.

The results are in: Giving Tuesday 2018 at UVic was the best one yet. On Nov. 27, in just 24 hours, more than 1,100 faculty, staff, students, donors and alumni came together to give more than $30,000 (and counting) in support of student clubs and activities on campus. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Rethinking culture

Hector Vazquez Cordoba, a PhD student in the Faculty of Education, came to UVic in response to a calling he felt to enhance music education in schools throughout Mexico. Now an accomplished violinist and tenured member of the Orquesta Universitaria de M煤sica Popular in Xalapa, Hector wanted to bring classical music to young people in small communities.
