A celebration of life will be held for Johannes Feddema on Thursday, Feb. 24 at the University Club in the Fireside Lounge.

It is with deep feelings of loss and sadness that the university community marks the passing of Dr. Ronald Lou-Poy, who served as the ninth chancellor of the 番茄社区 from 2003 to 2008.聽 Lou-Poy鈥檚 commitment to the community鈥�

A former professor鈥檚 legacy strengthens her former student鈥檚 resolve to revitalize the Kwak虝虝wala language within her family and community.

The 番茄社区 has lost a remarkable leader, with the passing of Reg Mitchell. Not only did he make incredible contributions to the field of chemistry, but he was also an enormous presence in the university's governance and its vibrant intellectual life.

The university flag will be lowered on Wednesday, April 28 to mark the Day of Mourning for persons killed or injured in the workplace.

We note with respect and solemnity the passing of Dr. Judith Anne Payne, who pioneered programs in Latin American studies at UVic.

With the passing of Dr. Ali Dastmalchian, the 番茄社区 lost an inspiring, dedicated and beloved former leader.

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of T鈥櫯俛t鈥檒ak瘫u艂聽Trish (Patricia) Rosborough on August 15, 2019.聽 Dr. Rosborough, from the Kwakiutl First Nation, was an Associate Professor in UV鈥�

John Money, Professor Emeritus of History at the 番茄社区, died on 26 July 2019 at the age of 80. John was 鈥渁 historian鈥檚 historian鈥� in all the best senses of that overused phrase.

Award-winning poet and novelist Patrick Lane passed away on March 7 at age 79, the result of a heart attack. His publisher, McClelland & Stewart, made the announcement, calling Lane 鈥渙ne of Canada's most renowned writers鈥� 鈥攁 claim few would refute. His passing made headlines in media outlets nationwide.

The archives of Edith Iglauer鈥攁cclaimed journalist, author and activist鈥攁re now available at UVic Libraries for learning and research. Recipient of a UVic honorary degree in 2006 for her role as a trailblazer, Iglauer had a love of the written word and an instinctive grasp of the significance of extraordinary events.

Edith Iglauer achieved an extraordinary writing career covering topics spanning the Second World War to a modern-day fishing village. Her personal and literary archives, including original notes from her New Yorker articles, have been donated to UVic Libraries for scholarly research.

It is with great sadness that the university community marks the passing of Dr. Howard Petch, former President of the 番茄社区, on November 26 at the age of 93. Petch was the university鈥檚 fourth President, and is well-remembered for his 15 years in office guiding the campus through an era of immense change, and prioritizing programs and values that have become the defining characteristics of UVic today.

When Marie Cooper (SWETALIYE) received her Honorary Doctor of Education degree from UVic in 2010, it was a moment she had been steering toward her entire life.聽A teacher, counsellor, Elder, advocate and innovator, Dr. Cooper鈥檚 efforts to promote and defend Indigenous education, language and culture led to the inclusive transformation of educational policies and practices for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, the UVic flag will be lowered in memory of Garth Kempster, who passed away on Aug. 2. Garth was a UVic staff member in the Division of Continuing Studies. A Celebration of Life will be held at UVic's Interfaith Chapel on Aug. 18 at 1 pm.
