The Transgender Archives at UVic: moving trans* history forward

At 320 linear feet, or 98 metres, of archival materials, books, and periodicals鈥攔epresenting 17 countries and spanning over a century of activism and research鈥擳he Transgender Archives at UVic are the largest in the world. From March 21 to 23, the Transgender Archives will host Moving Trans* History Forward, a three-day symposium of keynote speakers,聽 panel discussions, film screenings and art exhibitions devoted to the acquisition, preservation, and access of trans* history and archival materials.聽

Unity (1918) is history in the making

Kevin Kerr is coming full circle. Back in 2002, the noted playwright received the Governor General鈥檚 Literary Award for Unity (1918). Now a professor in the Department of Writing, Kerr is directing his first show for the Phoenix Theatre this month鈥攁nd it鈥檚 Unity (1918), a play that is regularly studied in first-year theatre classes. More significantly, it鈥檚 the first time he鈥檚 ever directed it.

UVic archive tells Holocaust survivor stories for future generations

April 15, 2013 is an anniversary date of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. Before that milestone, a research team of scholars, students and community members was busy collecting stories and perspectives over the previous 15 months for a unique new archival project now serving as a collection point for local life narratives of individuals who experienced the Holocaust directly.

The Empress Hotel opened its doors in 1908, less than 10 years before the start of World War One (1914-1918). Can you imagine the scenes over teacups in the recently built hotel when news of war broke out? Did the Inner Harbour look much different then, when Victoria residents strolling along the water first heard news their country was going to war?

Reg Roy's legacy for Canadian military history

February 22, 2013 - The Ring

Dr. Reginald H. Roy鈥檚 contribution to the UVic Special Collections is a tremendous legacy for the study of Canadian history, especially military history. Returning as a veteran after WWII, he went to Victoria College and then UBC earning an MA in history (1951). He then served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment as a historian in the Historical Section of DND, and as an archivist at the Public Archives of Canada. This early association with archives bore bountiful fruit in his later career as a historian.
