New research on long history of same-sex unions in US

The Supreme Court of the United States is set to hear arguments on April 28 in a landmark case on the constitutionality of state bans on same-sex marriage. One month ahead of the ruling, timely new research by UVic historian Dr. Rachel Hope Cleves is affording critical insights and historical context for the cresting debate on civil rights and full equality of marriage in the US, where same-sex marriage is already legal in nearly 40 states.

A widely respected scholar of semiotics, former magazine editor and author of From Papyrus to Hypertext (2009), Dr. Vandendorpe can also be considered a doctor of Wikipedia鈥攊n returning the 鈥減ulse鈥 and vigour to Wikipedia pages with his sharp editorial interventions.

History mystery central to First World War exhibit

It鈥檚 a history mystery worthy of its own exhibition. When Dr. Marcus Milwright, of UVic's recently renamed Art History and Visual Studies department, began planning his upcoming exhibit The Arts of World War I, he knew there was one item in the university library that he just had to use: a beautiful two-volume leather diary set illustrated with watercolours and pen-and-ink drawings of life during wartime. There鈥檚 only one problem: he has no idea to whom it actually belonged.
