Handling old manuscripts is a hands-on proposition

When it comes to handling old manuscripts, there鈥檚 no fooling around for UVic researcher Dr. Jamie Kemp鈥攖he gloves are definitely off. Despite the lingering meme of white-glove clad researchers delicately handling archival material, Kemp says bare skin is best when it comes to the centuries-old books in UVic Special Collections and University Archives.

FOXY peer leader thrilled by Arctic Inspiration award

January 16, 2015 - The Ring

Makenzie Zouboules, third-year UVic honours political science and writing co-op student, is something of a celebrity in her hometown of Yellowknife, NWT. Last month, along with FOXY co-founders Candice Lys and Nancy MacNeill, Zouboules accepted a $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize for their work with northern youth. Originally part of Lys鈥 PhD dissertation on public health promotion, FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a participatory research project aimed at talking with young people about sexual health, sexuality and relationships across the three northern Canadian territories.

Day in the life: Armando Tura

By Kaitlyn Rosenburg Though the UVic campus abounds with talent, Armando Tura has become something of a Renaissance man by pushing his interests to new heights both in the lab and on the field. During school hours, Tura鈥攁 PhD engineering grad鈥攃an be found teaching undergrad courses or completing magnetic refrigeration research in one of the integrated energy systems labs. After school, he steps behind the camera as the Vikes official photographer, capturing UVic athletes at their best. And in his spare time, he sails and pilots his own plane, which he built.
