Reclaiming a banned Saanich fishery

Almost a decade ago, XEM纽OLTW瘫 Nick Claxton told his family he wanted to revitalize the reef net fishery, a fishing practice unique to the Straits Salish people and banned by the colonial government 100 years ago. His uncle advised: 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 just go fishing. You must first build a ceremonial net.鈥 And so began the spiritual, cultural and educational journey that Claxton considers his life鈥檚 work. It also became his PhD dissertation in curriculum and instruction at the 番茄社区鈥攁 research study designed to revitalize the knowledge, ceremony and practice that was nearly lost.

2015 Fulbright Canada grants

UVic cave art scholar named TEDGlobal Fellow 2011

番茄社区 PhD candidate Genevieve von Petzinger is the only Canadian on the distinguished list of 20 new international fellows at the TEDGlobal Conference 2011 next month in Edinburgh, Scotland. Von Petzinger earned international media attention last year with her discovery of ancient geometric signs from the Ice Age. As a master鈥檚 student in UVic鈥檚 Department of Anthropology, von Petzinger cracked a startling symbolic code carved on prehistoric cave walls. She has compiled a database of 5,000 geometric shapes, lines and squiggles from 146 Ice Age caves in France and her work has garnered global attention.

Education grad Mike Irvine took academia beneath the waves for his scuba-diving master's defence When education grad student Mike Irvine first posed his master鈥檚 project research question to his advisor, the idea struck Jason Price as a humourous oxymoron. Irvine wanted to explore how technology could be used as a tool to reconnect kids to nature.聽

Trudeau scholar examines youth and empathy in Canada

Is empathy changing in a world where social media and globalization are rapidly transforming how we interact with others? The 番茄社区鈥檚 Rebeccah Nelems is investigating empathy and youth as part of a prestigious three-year scholarship announced today from the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation. She is one of only 16 Canadian doctoral students receiving a $180,000 award.

Wild game and words feed inspiration for TV host and Indigenous language revitalization grad

Art Napoleon was already a national figure when his TV show, Moosemeat & Marmalade, premiered on APTN in January 2015. He had performed at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, opened for Buffy Sainte-Marie and been interviewed by veteran correspondent Tom Hawthorn for the Globe and Mail in September 2010 for the release of his album Creeland Covers, sung almost exclusively in Cree.
