Nature, meet nurture: 2014 Staff Sustainability Champion Award

The idea is simple: teach children about the importance of connecting to nature when they鈥檙e young, and they鈥檒l grow into environmental leaders. On March 16, Sherri-Lynn Yazbeck and her team at UVic Child Care Services were awarded the 2014 Staff Sustainability Champion Award for their environmental engagement programs. The award was presented by UVic Vice-President Finance and Operations Gayle Gorrill. Yazbeck and her team of educators鈥擝atool Alishan, Ann Pickup and Julia Wilson鈥攑rovide nature-based learning for children aged 3-5. They promote hands-on learning for issues related to the environment and teach children the importance of environmental stewardship.

Online course shows how to put the brakes on climate change

It all began with a request from government. Could the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), which is hosted and led by UVic, come up with an informative yet engaging way to explain the complicated science behind global warming? As a result, world-leading climate scientists鈥攚ho were fortuitously based in Victoria鈥攇ot together to create the first free, interactive online course in PICS鈥檚 Climate Insights 101 series, Climate Science Basics, which was launched by then-Environment Minister Terry Lake in August 2011.

Bullfrog research takes big leap forward

Bullfrogs鈥攖o most of us they鈥檙e just big, green, bug-eyed critters that hop and croak and (usually) make us laugh. They鈥檙e also invasive in some regions, including southern Vancouver Island. But to scientists studying environmental health, bullfrogs are an ideal 鈥渟entinel鈥 species for monitoring the effects of pollutants such as pesticides, drugs and industrial effluents.

Call for Sustainability Fund applications

Do you have an energy or water-saving idea that could result in utility cost savings for the university? Through the Revolving Sustainability Fund initiative, you can see your idea put into practice and contribute to more sustainable operational practices at UVic. Eligible projects are those that reduce the use of electricity, natural gas, propane or water on campus.
