Arctic research propels ecologist into the ranks of Fulbright Scholars

June 5, 2015 - The Ring

Ecologist and ethnobiologist Dr. Trevor Lantz (environmental studies) has been named a Fulbright Scholar by the Fulbright Arctic Initiative for his Arctic ecosystems research. Lantz studies the rate and causes of Arctic environmental change and its consequences for northern communities. Using a combination of field studies, remote sensing, and collaboration with knowledgeable hunters and trappers, he will examine the vulnerability of Arctic coastlands to storm surges. His fieldwork will be conducted in the Beaufort Delta region of the Northwest Territories while collaboration with other Fulbright Arctic Initiative scholars will be in Nunavut and Finland.聽

UVic only Canadian university named on The Princeton Review's Green Rating Honor Roll

The Princeton Review has tallied Green Rating scores for 861 colleges in the US and Canada, and UVic is in the top 24 schools listed on the company鈥檚 2015 鈥淕reen Rating Honor Roll.鈥 Only those schools that achieved a perfect score of 99 in the Green Ratings were named to the honour roll, based on criteria in three broad areas:

From drawing board to proving ground: EcoCar 2 heads to final competition

UVic鈥檚 EcoCAR 2 team of engineering students aren鈥檛 just getting hands-on experience while they study鈥攖hey鈥檙e getting their hands dirty. Since April 2011, close to 60 students in mechanical, electrical, computer and software engineering, and business have been hard at work鈥攗sing multi-million dollar dSPACE, Siemens and MathWorks modelling and testing tools, and a mechanic鈥檚 full suite of wrenches and ratchets鈥攔e-designing and retrofitting a GM-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco into a next generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
