FOXY peer leader thrilled by Arctic Inspiration award

Makenzie Zouboules, third-year UVic honours political science and writing co-op student, is something of a celebrity in her hometown of Yellowknife, NWT. Last month, along with FOXY co-founders Candice Lys and Nancy MacNeill, Zouboules accepted a $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize for their work with northern youth. Originally part of Lys鈥 PhD dissertation on public health promotion, FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a participatory research project aimed at talking with young people about sexual health, sexuality and relationships across the three northern Canadian territories.

2014 Times Higher Education rankings released

UVic ranked among world鈥檚 elite universities On Oct. 1, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings placed UVic on its elite Top 200 list, among the top one per cent of universities around the world. Ranked at #173 globally, UVic is the top-ranked university in Canada without a medical school. Only eight Canadian universities were ranked in the Top 200.聽 UVic first broke into the THE Elite Top 200 list in 2010, placing it among the top one per cent of higher education institutions worldwide.聽

Universities make cases for provincial and federal funding

On Sept. 19, the Research Universities' Council of BC (RUCBC) presented its submission to the BC legislature's Finance Committee (pdf), making the case for short term reinvestment and long term strategic funding for post-secondary education. The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) also recently released its recommendations for the 2015 federal budget, focusing on enhanced funding for research and innovation, advocating for an opportunities strategy for young Canadians and new initiatives to support Indigenous post-secondary education.

Education grad shows leadership on the learning curve

Gulf Islands Secondary students knew they had a different type of science teacher when a lesson on heart function had them running around a room, pretending to be red blood cells. Nikita Pardiwala created the outline of a huge human heart on the floor of a large multi-purpose room for her Biology 12 students. Then they became red blood cells, running through the heart to the lungs, dropping off carbon dioxide.

Economic role for universities is key, says Cassels

Building new programs and expanding capacity in high-demand areas to meet the needs of both students and the new economy is a key role for BC postsecondary institutions, says 番茄社区 President Jamie Cassels. Cassels was speaking to an audience of 160 business leaders in Vancouver April 24 during a panel on 鈥淚nstitutions as Economic Enablers鈥 that was part of the 鈥淧utting BC To Work鈥 business forum hosted by the Business Council of BC and CKNW AM980.
