Entrepreneurship and Indigenous education professors win prestigious teaching awards

A professor of entrepreneurship who has helped boost the number of Indigenous-owned businesses across BC and a professor of Indigenous education who has made significant advancements in the indigenization of curriculum for BC students are the 13th and 14th 番茄社区 scholars recognized with Canada鈥檚 most prestigious award for excellence in leadership and teaching.

Focus on education

Four students from Africa are completing PhDs at UVic with the help of donors and UVic鈥檚 Faculty of Education. Godwin Nnko, Kassim Dadi, William Pastory and Patrick Makokoro are receiving support from the Millennium Futures Fund and the Dr. Jean Downie Dey Memorial Award.

For Dominique Rochefort, a citizen of the M茅tis Nation, the journey to become an empowered teacher was mined with self-doubts and life challenges. Rochefort graduates with a UVic BEd in elementary teacher education鈥攁nd will receive a Maxwell Cameron award from the BC Teachers鈥 Federation for the outstanding quality of her practice teaching, her top GPA and engagement in social justice.

Patrick Lane: Rest in Poetry

Award-winning poet and novelist Patrick Lane passed away on March 7 at age 79, the result of a heart attack. His publisher, McClelland & Stewart, made the announcement, calling Lane 鈥渙ne of Canada's most renowned writers鈥 鈥攁 claim few would refute. His passing made headlines in media outlets nationwide.

Connecting active living and special needs education

When Paige Quinn first moved to Vancouver Island to start her undergraduate degree, she intended on becoming an elementary school teacher. She had always loved working with children and grew up with a mother who taught grade one. But taking one of UVic's Exercise Science, Physical Health and Education classes hooked her on the program. She graduates this month.

Rethinking culture

Hector Vazquez Cordoba, a PhD student in the Faculty of Education, came to UVic in response to a calling he felt to enhance music education in schools throughout Mexico. Now an accomplished violinist and tenured member of the Orquesta Universitaria de M煤sica Popular in Xalapa, Hector wanted to bring classical music to young people in small communities.

Helga Thorson is familiar with students feeling fazed at the end of four weeks of study of the Holocaust and its memorialization. Since 2011, she has led students at the I-witness Field School. Students are totally immersed in the material without distraction, which separates the field school experience from the classroom. Then there is the subject matter: the Holocaust and humanity鈥檚 immense responsibility to remember, even as those with first-hand knowledge are passing on.
