Some people are born leaders, and convocating graduate Tiffany Yu undoubtedly falls into that category. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Yu saw a need in the Faculty of Engineering and set out to create change, becoming heavily involved with the Engineering Student Society (ESS). After attending the National Conference on Women in Engineering, Yu was inspired to create a women in engineering group at UVic. With help from faculty members and fellow ESS members Taylor Entz and Alisa Minderova, Leadership Through Diversity was born.

It鈥檚 said that many hands make for light work, but it was more a case of many hands making the art work when it came to the creation and raising of the world鈥檚 largest button blanket. Witnessed by a standing-room-only crowd at First Peoples House, the Big Button Blanket received its inaugural performance during the opening ceremonies of the Provost鈥檚 Diversity Research Forum on January 29.
When The Ring asked me to cover this year鈥檚 Provost鈥檚 Diversity Research Forum, I accepted on the condition I could profile the event from the perspective of a student questioning the role of diversity in Canada. As a middle-class Caucasian female in the last semester of an undergraduate degree, diversity had become a buzzword thrown around in textbooks. Was I actually diverse? And more importantly, did I live in a diverse space where I could practice social responsibility?

The second annual Indigenous and Diversity Research Forum: Critical Conversations Continue, takes place Feb. 12鈥�13 in the Student Union Building. The 2014 Provost's Diversity Research Forum, Critical Conversations: Arts, Allies and Activism will take place on Jan. 29-30, 2014. Featured keynote speakers are authors Denise Chong (The Concubine's Children) and Yvonne Brown (Dead Woman Pickney: A Memoir of Childhood in Jamaica).
Nominations are now open for two new awards celebrating UVic community members who advance the rights of others. The inaugural Provost鈥檚 Advocacy and Activism Awards in Equity and Diversity recognize the achievements of individuals or groups in the university community who demonstrate dedication to the advancement of social equity.

Four UVic professors and activists passionately spoke on the topic of 50 Years of Activism: Rethinking Realities on Jan. 30, and articulated the status of research in their prospective fields. They spoke in the SUB to a large audience as part of the Provost鈥檚 Diversity Research Forum, Critical Conversations Rethinking Realities.
Congratulations to the most recent recipients of grants from the Community Building Fund, sponsored by the Vice-President Academic and Provost. The special project fund, which is open to students, staff and faculty, supports initiatives that enhance equity, diversity and inclusion at the university. Grant recipients are selected twice a year by members of the Provost鈥檚 Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee.

The 2013 competition recognized 55 organizations that lead the nation in creating inclusive workplace cultures. UVic was one of only two Victoria organizations included on the list, and one of five in BC. The university was recognized for a variety of initiatives, including managing a mental health task force, maintaining a diversity and equity steering committee, and hosting an annual diversity research forum.
