Engineering a culture shift on campus

November 7, 2014 - The Ring

Some people are born leaders, and convocating graduate Tiffany Yu undoubtedly falls into that category. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Yu saw a need in the Faculty of Engineering and set out to create change, becoming heavily involved with the Engineering Student Society (ESS). After attending the National Conference on Women in Engineering, Yu was inspired to create a women in engineering group at UVic. With help from faculty members and fellow ESS members Taylor Entz and Alisa Minderova, Leadership Through Diversity was born.

The blanket arrives, as invitation and metaphor

It鈥檚 said that many hands make for light work, but it was more a case of many hands making the art work when it came to the creation and raising of the world鈥檚 largest button blanket. Witnessed by a standing-room-only crowd at First Peoples House, the Big Button Blanket received its inaugural performance during the opening ceremonies of the Provost鈥檚 Diversity Research Forum on January 29.

Shared stories shape extraordinary experiences

When The Ring asked me to cover this year鈥檚 Provost鈥檚 Diversity Research Forum, I accepted on the condition I could profile the event from the perspective of a student questioning the role of diversity in Canada. As a middle-class Caucasian female in the last semester of an undergraduate degree, diversity had become a buzzword thrown around in textbooks. Was I actually diverse? And more importantly, did I live in a diverse space where I could practice social responsibility?

The 番茄社区 has been named one of Canada鈥檚 Best Diversity Employers for the third year in a row. The winners of the 2014 competition were announced Feb. 10, recognizing 55 organizations across the country for a range of exceptional initiatives to attract and retain employees from diverse communities.

Indigenous and diversity research forum

January 6, 2014 - The Ring

The second annual Indigenous and Diversity Research Forum: Critical Conversations Continue, takes place Feb. 12鈥13 in the Student Union Building. Community Building Fund supports campus diversity

March 7, 2013 - The Ring

Congratulations to the most recent recipients of grants from the Community Building Fund, sponsored by the Vice-President Academic and Provost. The special project fund, which is open to students, staff and faculty, supports initiatives that enhance equity, diversity and inclusion at the university. Grant recipients are selected twice a year by members of the Provost鈥檚 Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee.

UVic a top diversity employer

February 28, 2013 - The Ring

For the second year in a row, the 番茄社区 has been named one of Canada鈥檚 Best Diversity Employers. The 2013 competition recognized 55 organizations that lead the nation in creating inclusive workplace cultures. UVic was one of only two Victoria organizations included on the list, and one of five in BC. The university was recognized for a variety of initiatives, including managing a mental health task force, maintaining a diversity and equity steering committee, and hosting an annual diversity research forum.
