We use gold for jewelry, tooth fillings and Olympic medals­—and soon for Zika detection. UVic chemist Alex Brolo is working with the precious metal to provide a faster (and inexpensive) way to diagnose devastating viruses such as Zika and dengue fever. Brolo is developing new ways to use gold nanostructures in medical applications.

Development of syphilis vaccine one step closer

August 16, 2016 - Media release

An international team of scientists co-led by a ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø researcher is one step closer to a vaccine for syphilis. Co-leaders UVic microbiologist Caroline Cameron and University of Washington’s Sheila Lukehart received a $2.3 million grant (USD) from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. The grant will allow them to continue to make headway on vaccine development.

Canada’s academic stars to converge on Victoria Hey Victoria, get ready to host almost 400 distinguished academic guests—the Royal Society of Canada is coming to town! The Royal Society (RSC) is Canada’s national academy dedicated to promoting learning and research in three main streams: the arts and humanities; the social sciences; and the sciences. Every year, the RSC holds its annual general meeting in a different Canadian city. This year, RSC fellows and college members from across the country will converge on the Victoria Conference Centre/Fairmont Empress Hotel on Nov. 26–28. The ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø is the sponsor institution.

Student chemistry symposium builds skills, confidence and elemental connections

The exchange of ideas at major conferences is a chief driving force of scientific progress. Conferences and symposiums provide opportunities to share one’s work with the global scientific community, to learn about and be inspired by emerging research and, perhaps most importantly, to network with other scientists. On Jan. 30, the UVic Department of Chemistry hosted the Chemical Institute of Canada’s 2014 Vancouver Island Section Student Symposium—a regional symposium offering a scaled-down conference experience to student researchers without the financial hurdles of registration fees and travel.
