Melina Laboucan, a 33-year-old member of the Lubicon Cree First Nation, came to UVic's Indigenous Governance (IGov) master's program in 2013 with a clear purpose: to develop a solar energy project plan that would tackle Indigenous and environmental issues in her home town of Little Buffalo, Alberta.

Intercultural collaborations forge first business PhD

鈥淚鈥檝e always been fascinated by how people work across differences,鈥 says Sarah Easter, the Sardul S. Gill Graduate School鈥檚 first PhD alumna. Her recently-defended dissertation stands as testament to this passion: her work explores (among other things) which traits allow individuals to successfully collaborate, despite culturally-based differences. The Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness鈥攃omprised of over forty organizations and associations from different sectors鈥攑rovided the perfect case study for her to research these individuals in action.

An international quest to study and spread practices of inclusion

In the basement of the library, in a quiet area behind compact shelving, there鈥檚 a spot where students meet to secretly eat and talk. When Maram Alraygi discovered it, it became her favourite place to pray, providing a little spiritual break, she says in the midst of a full day of studying. And she liked sharing the hidden space with others. 鈥淚 experienced the most blessed time there,鈥 says the Master鈥檚 of Education grad.

Soon to graduate with a BFA in theatre, 24-year-old Powar has been making waves as Vancouver rapper Horsepowar, thanks to a trio of independent album releases, gigs at high-profile music festivals, and the kind of media attention most emerging artists only dream about.

Reclaiming a banned Saanich fishery

January 21, 2016 - The Ring

Almost a decade ago, XEM纽OLTW瘫 Nick Claxton told his family he wanted to revitalize the reef net fishery, a fishing practice unique to the Straits Salish people and banned by the colonial government 100 years ago. His uncle advised: 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 just go fishing. You must first build a ceremonial net.鈥 And so began the spiritual, cultural and educational journey that Claxton considers his life鈥檚 work. It also became his PhD dissertation in curriculum and instruction at the 番茄社区鈥攁 research study designed to revitalize the knowledge, ceremony and practice that was nearly lost.
