Students’ mini-satellite to help astronomers explore the origins of the universe

Students from the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø are designing a tiny satellite with big aspirations. When a robotic arm on the International Space Station tosses it into orbit in 2020, the satellite—funded through a national post-secondary funding initiative of the Canadian Space Agency—that's no bigger than a two-liter carton of milk will become a vital tool to help astronomers and cosmologists better understand the origins and future of the universe.

Whales in ice-free Arctic face emerging threat from vessels

UVic marine biologist Lauren McWhinnie is lead author in a new study which warns that vessel disturbance could very likely impact the social behaviours, distribution and long-term survival of marine mammals in the Arctic. They rely on a quiet environment to communicate and forage; but Arctic sea ice is shrinking and therefore shipping traffic is increasing.
