Cost of substance use in Canada: $38.4 billion a year

Substance use costs Canadian society $38.4 billion a year, or almost $1,100 for every person in Canada, according to a new study. The Canadian Substance Use Costs and Harms study, produced by UVic's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research and the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, examines the costs and harms associated with substance use, and spans four broad areas: health care, lost production, criminal justice and other direct costs.

Study scrutinizes investment in fossil fuels

One of Canada's largest pension fund's continued and increasing investment in fossil fuels does not support the widely held goal of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, says a new report by 番茄社区 and University of British Columbia researchers affiliated with the Corporate Mapping Project, a six-year research and public engagement initiative.

Effects of cannabis use on youth: can we predict the future?

New research by UVic psychologist Bonnie Leadbeater and lead author Kara Thompson from St. Francis Xavier University has identified specific patterns of cannabis use by youth. Thompson and Leadbeater, along with two other researchers, drew from an earlier youth survey conducted by UVic and Island Health. They expect their new findings will help inform current and future cannabis policies in Canada.
