Student Experience of Learning (SEL) Survey

The Student Experience of Learning (SEL) survey, (formally known as the Course Experience Survey or CES) is a tool used to gather feedback on the student experience for courses taken at the 番茄社区. Administered by Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation (LTSI), the SEL feedback is used:

  • by the instructor for making adjustments to teaching and course design;
  • by the department for assuring the quality of instruction and assessing the instructor;
  • and by the University for strategic planning with regard to meeting its commitment to high-quality education and student success.

We recommend that you add a SEL statement in your syllabus, explain the importance of the SEL at the beginning of the term and before the SEL opens at the end of the course (usually the last two weeks for a full term course). For the best results, treat the online SEL as you would the paper version and give students time in class to complete the survey.

The following suggested SEL statement was developed by the SEL Faculty Advisory Committee, August 2014.

Can we change when the SEL is completed?

In unusual circumstances exceptions may be made to when or if the SEL may be completed by students. Exceptions include:

  • during the Summer Session when the final exam is administered before the last day of class as listed in Banner;
  • when student access to the SEL is difficult and therefore the survey dates should be adjusted to enable completion of the survey, or;
  • courses are required but do not have credits associated with them in Banner and are lacking components usually associated with the SEL.

It is not appropriate to request CES exceptions to improve response rates.

Where can reports be accessed by Instructors and their chairs/directors and deans?

Instructor reports can be accessed at any time by going to your CES dashboard and signing in using your secure UVic NetLink ID. Please be aware that when you are not teaching your access status will have changed. If you are denied access please contact ceshelp@uvic.ca. Chair/Director/Dean reports can only be accessed through Microsoft Teams once permission has been provisioned via departmental CES Admins.

Will the documents for past terms still be available for access on Microsoft Teams?

Yes, reports prior to Summer 2014 will still be available.
