Bio

I have been teaching in the department since 1988, but began teaching at UVic in the Spanish language program of Continuing Studies in 1987. My undergraduate studies were done at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. After receiving my BA in Spanish Language and Literature with a minor in Latin American History, I did a Masters degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

My greatest accomplishment at UVic has been establishing a study abroad program with other members of the department for our undergraduate students. We have run successful programs since 2003 in Spain, Mexico and Ecuador. I have served as the Coordinator for the department´s study abroad program in Spain since 2008 and prior to that ran our programs in Mexico, Ecuador and Spain from 2008 to 2014.

Research Interests

  • 19th Century Realist Novel
  • Colonial and Contemporary Mexican Novels

The topic of my Masters´thesis was on the 19th century Spanish author, Pío Baroja, and I have taught 19th century literature at UVic in the past. I greatly enjoy teaching first and second year Spanish language. Throughout my time at the university, I have also taught courses with a focus on communication, the culture of Spain and Mexico and I regularly teach our "Introduction to Hispanic Literature" course. My newest course offering is "Mexican Culture Through Food".

I am one of the co-authors of the Canadian edition of "!Hola, amigos!", in publication since 2008.  We are currently working on the 4th edition of the textbook, which has a wide distribution across the country.

For many years, I have also taught for the Continuing Studies Travel Study Program, having led education tours to Spain and Latin America, and have been the on-site coordinator for travel study programs to Cuba, Chile and Argentina and the Northwest coast of British Columbia.
