Public Lecture: "Health Equity: Do Black Lives Matter?"

In this lecture, Dr. Dryden outlines the relationship between racism and racial discrimination in health needs and outcomes. She argues that we must study the relationships between colonialism, racism, medicine, and health, if we are to improve health outcomes in Black communities in “Canada.”

Dr. Dryden is the James R. Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies in the Faculty of Medicine and an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology. Dr. Dryden is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research is situated in Black Canadian Thought, specifically Black queer diasporic analytics. Dr. Dryden is a Researcher-In-Residence and a member of the African, Caribbean, and Black Program Science Scholars Lab, at the Ontario HIV Treatment Network. Dr. Dryden is also a member of the Black Feminist Health Science Studies International Research Group and is the co-editor of Disrupting Queer Inclusion: Canadian Homonationalisms and the Politics of Belonging (UBC Press) and has published a number of peer-reviewed papers.

Chair Chat


Thursday, February 27th, Noon to 2pm


In September 2019, the JRJ Chair in Black Canadian Studies (Faculty of Medicine) held the first ever Chair Chat. Chair Chats provide an opportunity for Black medical students, Black students in Health professions (dentistry, nursing, pharmacology, etc.), and Black Graduate students (across disciplines) to gather. This safe space is where those in attendance discuss their experience as Black students in med school and graduate studies, along with exploring the field of Black studies and strategizing around issues of anti-black racism. Chair Chats occur the 4th Thursday of each month: September-November; January-April.
