Research

  • Water and sanitation for low resource contexts
  • Drinking water quality and treatment
  • Wastewater treatment and resource recovery

My interests and expertise are at the crossroads of environmental and public health engineering. This includes the development and evaluation of water and sanitation/wastewater technologies, field- and operator-appropriate water/wastewater/ faecal sludge quality analytical methods, and functional ecology characterisation of biological treatment systems for safeguarding the health of the public and the environment. My activities are focused both on developing countries and in industrialised countries with projects ranging from the development of methods for the online monitoring and control of disinfection by products in Canadian municipalities (photo-left) to the delivery of safe water and sanitation for humanitarian relief (photo-right).

Recruitment

I am always on the lookout for highly motivated and talented grad students and postdoctoral scholars to work with. Applications are welcome from candidates with degrees in Environmental, Civil & Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and related areas. Funding (and training) opportunities are available for MASc/ PhD positions (I am happy to discuss funding applications with postdoctoral scholars). Top-ups are available to students that receive independent research scholarships. Highly qualified students will be invited to submit a formal application to the university.
