From Haida Gwaii to the 番茄社区, Ruth Parrish鈥檚 work as an administrative assistant for the Indigenous Studies program is informed by her own journey to reconnect with her Haida roots.

Damage and service disruptions across our region are substantial in some places. UVic is working to support the needs of students, faculty and staff who now face extraordinary challenges.

Fawthorpe is manager of Interior Modification Services in Facilities Management, where she and her team of five interior designers look after all the furniture and interior design needs on campus鈥攆rom outfitting a new space to remodelling and updating a previously used facility.

Newly installed 番茄社区 President Kevin Hall is the first president of the university to seek permission to work on the territory of local First Nations before taking office.

Lydia Toorenburgh joins the Faculties of Science, Social Sciences and Humanities as the Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator. The new position is another step towards the Indigenization of UVic.

A day in the life of UVic Multifaith Chaplain Henri Lock begins with meditation. Since COVID restrictions began, he has taken that practice online to share with others.

Approximately 20 per cent of staff are working on campus at least part of the time. That number is expected to steadily rise as the COVID-19 vaccination program rolls out across the country.

Now until Feb. 8, 2021, faculty and instructors are encouraged to apply for UVic's new Anti-Racism Initiative Grant. Grants of up to $7,500 are available to support the revision of programs, courses, curriculum or learning resources in ways that help fulfill UVic鈥檚 commitment to anti-racism and the values of equity, diversity and inclusion.

The university flag will be lowered on Friday, Sept. 11, in honour of UVic students Emma Machado and John Geerdes, and UVic Law staff member Janet Person.

This year鈥檚 President鈥檚 Extraordinary Service Awards honour a big picture thinker, a master collaborator, Giving Tuesday鈥檚 record-smashing team and sustainability-minded service workers.
