Athletic Teams and Olympic Dreams

Heroes or chokers, rich or poor, pro or amateur, there鈥檚 nothing simple about how we see athletes. 鈥淲e even demand all of them to be role models, as though athleticism is itself imbued with some noble purpose,鈥 says noted sports writer and veteran journalist Tom Hawthorn. Hawthorn is the 2014 Southam Lecturer for the Department of Writing and will discuss our love/hate relationship with athletes in a free public lecture at 7pm Wednesday, January 29, in UVic鈥檚 HSD A240.

Sedins bring a rare style of leadership to hockey games

番茄社区 academic Carolyn Crippen scored a coup Vancouver hockey writers dream of鈥攁 lengthy, exclusive interview with NHL superstars Henrik and Daniel Sedin. Crippen, an associate professor in the Faculty of Education, conducted the fall 2011 interview as part of a three-year case study of the leadership attributes of the twins. The results are in a paper published today in the leading online physical and health education periodical PHEnex.

Building community by coaching rugby in Africa

In June 2013, two Vikes student-athletes travelled to Uganda, siezing an opportunity to represent the Vikes and BC rugby programs internationally, while volunteering with Gainline Africa. Rugby players Sofija Novakovic and Caitlin Harvey left the island for 20 days to venture to Africa, supporting Gainline Africa鈥檚 international development work using the sport of rugby to support healty communities.

Dani Sinclair named new head coach of Vikes women's basketball

Dani Sinclair was introduced as the new head coach of the UVic Vikes women's basketball team April 18.聽 A former Vikes product of long-time head coach Kathy Shields, Sinclair is no stranger to the program that boasts nine national titles. A former CIS national champion with the Vikes and Athlete of the Year at McMaster University, she brings a wealth of knowledge both as a decorated athlete and an experienced coach.

Ken and Kathy Shields honoured

February 6, 2013 - The Ring

Ken and Kathy Shields, one of the most storied and successful coaching duos in CIS history, have been included in the BC Sports Hall of Fame鈥檚 2013 Class of Inductees. As head coaches of the 番茄社区 Vikes men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball teams, the husband and wife were at the helm of two of the most successful varsity programs in the country, earning a combined fifteen national titles. Integral to the development of the UVic men鈥檚 basketball dynasty of the 1980s, Ken Shields coached the team to an incredible seven straight CIAU/CIS Championships and earned four CIAU/CIS Coach of the Year awards. As head coach of the Vikes women鈥檚 basketball team for over 20 years Kathy Shields won eight CIAU/CIS national titles and was a two-time CIAU/CIS Coach of the Year. Ken and Kathy Shields will be formally inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame at the 45th Annual Banquet of Champions on Sept. 19, 2013.
