Two major international university rankings were released this month, and both of them show the outsized impact of UVic research on the global stage.
UVic is 1st in Canada for climate action and in the global top 10 for impact, according to the 2023 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. THE scores universities and colleges for how they are responding to UN goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity.
For the ninth time, UVic has been named one of Canada鈥檚 Greenest Employers. The national awards, organized by the Canada鈥檚 Top 100 Employers project, recognize Canadian employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of sustainability and climate action. UVic was one of only three BC universities鈥攐ut of more than 20鈥攖o receive this honour.
The 番茄社区 has been recognized as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers for the 12th year in a row. Winners of the 2023 competition were announced March 7, with UVic among two BC universities to be honoured.
International research rankings released today by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands once again show that UVic researchers consistently publish a greater concentration of high-impact findings based on international collaborations than any other school or institute in North America鈥攁 distinction it鈥檚 held for 11 of the last 12 years. In mathematics and computer science, UVic is the top university in Canada, and number 50 globally, for its proportion of high-impact research findings. UVic also scores second nationally for research in physical sciences and engineering, closely tailing the University of Toronto.
The 番茄社区鈥檚 activities, students and alumni help generate $3.3 billion to BC鈥檚 economy and overall prosperity, an independent study and analysis has determined. The independent report by Emsi Burning Glass, released today, indicates that UVic鈥檚 total impact in BC supported 40,595 jobs. The economic impact for Greater Victoria is $1.8 billion, or one of out of every nine jobs.

The 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject, released April 6, show that the 番茄社区 is recognized for world-class performance in a growing number of academic fields. QS placed UVic among the world鈥檚 top 300 universities in 15 fields, up from 10 last year, with one field, geology, among the top 100.
According to the 2021 Sustainable Campus Index, released in November 2021, UVic continues to be a post-secondary sustainability leader.
Maclean鈥檚 magazine has released its annual university rankings, with UVic ranked as Canada鈥檚 top comprehensive university, a distinction it shares with SFU this year. UVic was also ranked as the top school for promoting Indigenous visibility鈥攁 position it鈥檚 held since this category was introduced in 2018.
The results of the 2022 QS World University Rankings show that UVic continues to be a global leader, climbing 36 places from last year. UVic is also ranked at 120 globally in the primary QS indicator of research strength, citations per faculty member.
