Eclectic Masterminds lecture series returns with glaciers, zombies, music and linguistics

April 10, 2015 - The Ring

This year鈥檚 series of Masterminds free public lectures traverses an eclectic terrain of ideas. A singer, trombone player and a tuba player meet on stage to play music and tell stories about some of their life-changing musical experiences. A computer scientist compares historical and current photographs of mountain glaciers as part of an investigation into the effects of climate change in the West. A medical anthropologist combines research, storytelling and zombie metaphors as part of a cautionary tale of stress in our culture. And a linguist and app developer uses sound and video to demonstrate how we produce language.

Day in the life: Kirk McNally

A decade ago he was recording the likes of A-list rockers R.E.M., Bryan Adams and the Foo Fighters, but these days you鈥檒l more likely find Kirk McNally tweaking the levels in the MacLaurin Building鈥檚 recording studio. But as the Audio Specialist and Recording Engineer for the School of Music since 2004, the best part of McNally鈥檚 job is that he doesn鈥檛 really have a typical day.

Thanks to 18 submissions from across campus鈥攊ncluding entries by students, faculty and administration alike鈥攖he School of Music / Vikes Nation Rally Song contest has definitely been a hit.聽Entries ran the gamut from rap and rock to cheers and chants, and have been narrowed to a top-three list of finalists.

McDougall CD nominated for Juno

March 7, 2013 - The Ring

School of Music Professor Emeritus Ian McDougall鈥檚 Fine Arts benefit CD, The Very Thought of You, has been nominated for a 2013 Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year. It was produced by McDougall鈥檚 wife, Barbara, and features a selection of jazz standards with strings. The album鈥檚 nomination came as a surprise to them both. 鈥淏arb and I are overjoyed about the news,鈥 says McDougall, who recently presented the Faculty of Fine Arts with a cheque for $16,000 raised through CD sales鈥攖he first significant payment to his Ten Mile Fine Arts Student Assistance Fund. The Juno winners are announced on April 21, and the CD is available on campus at the Bookstore, Arts Place Cafe, the School of Music, Phoenix Theatre and the Fine Arts office.

Which, in a musical nutshell, is exactly what School of Music professor Ajtony Csaba had in mind when he approached UVic鈥檚 Learning Without Borders Program (LWB), which supports internationalization of the curriculum.
