A second Giller Prize for Esi Edugyan

Internationally acclaimed UVic writing alumna Esi Edugyan has won the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her latest novel, Washington Black. Edugyan wins $100,000 on this, the 25th anniversary of Canada鈥檚 richest literary award鈥攁nd also earns the distinction of being one of only three authors to twice win the Giller Prize, alongside M.G. Vassanji and Alice Munro.

Bright lights, big city for English grad

Growing up on a small island three hours north of Victoria, the outdoors served as Iona Lister's classroom. Home-schooled for the most part until high school, Lister spent her days reading, writing and making music while immersed in nature. The English master's student, who graduates this June, has since taken to travelling, trekking across Europe and South America, and learning several languages, including Spanish and French.

Victoria's Bell Jar

October 26, 2016 - The Ring

UVic Libraries has acquired a rare print edition of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and revealed this one-of-a-kind volume on Oct. 26 in time for a lecture at UVic on Plath's birthdate, Oct. 27. This unique volume features original sketches added by hand by Plath's own daughter, the artist and writer Frieda Hughes.
