Student designer reconstructs a legacy look for the latest Phoenix production鈥攖he modern masterpiece 7 Stories by Morris Panych.

The archives of Edith Iglauer鈥攁cclaimed journalist, author and activist鈥攁re now available at UVic Libraries for learning and research. Recipient of a UVic honorary degree in 2006 for her role as a trailblazer, Iglauer had a love of the written word and an instinctive grasp of the significance of extraordinary events.

Edith Iglauer achieved an extraordinary writing career covering topics spanning the Second World War to a modern-day fishing village. Her personal and literary archives, including original notes from her New Yorker articles, have been donated to UVic Libraries for scholarly research.

Internationally acclaimed UVic writing alumna Esi Edugyan has won the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her latest novel, Washington Black. Edugyan wins $100,000 on this, the 25th anniversary of Canada鈥檚 richest literary award鈥攁nd also earns the distinction of being one of only three authors to twice win the Giller Prize, alongside M.G. Vassanji and Alice Munro.

The Malahat Review has a new editor: long-time editorial board member Iain Higgins will head the prestigious literary journal for the next three years.

Growing up on a small island three hours north of Victoria, the outdoors served as Iona Lister's classroom. Home-schooled for the most part until high school, Lister spent her days reading, writing and making music while immersed in nature. UVic is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its revered literary journal, The Malahat Review, including with a limited-edition monograph by UVic Libraries to be launched Jan. 25 and a new exhibition opening the same day. Outgoing editor John Barton says being published in The Malahat "is a rite of passage for many writers."

The first edition of The Malahat Review came off the presses the same year as Expo 鈥�67 was in Montreal and the first moon landing was still two years away. In its 50-year run, this revered literary journal has served as a springboard for some of the most recognizable names in Canadian publishing.

One of Canada鈥檚 leading literary journals is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Established in 1967, The Malahat Review has featured emerging and established writers, discovered promising new talent and presented perceptive critical comment on other works.

鈥婾Vic is home to a leading scholar of vampire myth in literature and film. Peter Golz, on the 15th anniversary of his popular course, is available to media for comment on the use of critical tools and theory on this 'spooky' topic.

UVic Libraries has acquired a rare print edition of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and revealed this one-of-a-kind volume on Oct. 26 in time for a lecture at UVic on Plath's birthdate, Oct. 27. This unique volume features original sketches added by hand by Plath's own daughter, the artist and writer Frieda Hughes.

The hashtag #makingEME 鈥� for a UVic conference on the literature and culture of medieval England 鈥� was trending second only to #royalvisitcanada for the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Sept. 24.

Published author and master's graduate are two things Elizabeth Bassett can add to her resume as she crosses the stage at this June鈥檚 convocation ceremony.
