New Trudeau Scholar seeks change for Indigenous peoples

UVic聽Law student Aaron Mills鈥 doctoral work, which explores conflicting legal orders and the workings of contemporary colonialism, has earned him substantial praise and cemented his position as a leading scholar on Canadian constitutionalism and Indigenous law. Mills is a Vanier scholar and a former Ivy League Fulbright scholar. This week, he was handed yet another honour when he was named a Trudeau scholar鈥攐ne of only 14 given out this year.

Inaugural Engaged Scholar Award recipients announced

Congratulations to Dr. Bernie Pauly of the School of Nursing and Dr. Val Napoleon of the Faculty of Law, who have been named the inaugural recipients of the Provost鈥檚 Engaged Scholarship Award. The newly created awards program is intended to support and enhance UVic鈥檚 vision for the integration of outstanding scholarship, inspired teaching and real-life, community engagement. It recognizes tenured members of faculty who have achieved great distinction as community engaged scholars.

When people ask Renee McBeth what she does for a living, she often gives the same answer. 鈥淚 tell people I鈥檓 an organizer,鈥欌 she says with a laugh. 鈥淚 depend on post-it notes and to-do lists.鈥 Indeed, as someone who holds dual positions at UVic鈥檚 Faculty of Law, her daily balancing act requires a high degree of prioritization and time management.

Engaged scholarship and advocacy worthy of UVic鈥檚 highest faculty award

If you don鈥檛 know what it means to be named a UVic Distinguished Professor, don鈥檛 fret: they鈥檙e a rare breed. The newest recipient, Dr. Susan Boyd, is only the 13th UVic professor to receive the award鈥攖he highest academic honour UVic can bestow on faculty鈥攕ince its creation in 2002. Boyd鈥檚 activist presence on substantive social justice and marginalization issues has led to a tremendous scholarly output.
