World's first Indigenous law program launches with historic and emotional ceremony

In an emotional ceremony on Sept. 25 to launch the world’s first Indigenous law program, Elders, national and provincial leaders, scholars and others from the UVic community gathered in First Peoples House to welcome the first cohort of 26 students who have come from across Canada to attend the program.

Elders, national and provincial leaders, students and scholars launch historic Indigenous law degree

The historic launch today of the world's first law degree to combine the study of Indigenous and non-Indigenous law welcomed the first cohort of 26 students from across Canada and acknowledged the efforts to establish the far-reaching response to Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Expert on Trinity Western University Supreme Court ruling

Kathryn Chan (Faculty of Law) is available to media to discuss the June 15 Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling on whether law societies have the right to deny accreditation to the proposed law school at Trinity Western University. She can comment on what implications the TWU decision might have for religious institutions, LGBTQI+ persons and legal education in Canada.

Law school can be stressful. And hard. Add to that becoming a new father during your second year and you've got a big challenge on your hands. Will McClary took on that challenge, and because of the support he received at UVic Law, he took it in stride. Then he added an executive role on the board of the Law Student Society (LSS).

BC budget supports UVic initiatives

February 22, 2018 - The Ring

On Feb. 20 the provincial government tabled Budget 2018 which includes support of a UVic law program that will be the first of its kind in the world, funding for tuition waivers for former youth in care and a change in the policies for financing of student housing, which will help with the construction of a new UVic residence.
