Two UVic programs each awarded $500,000 for Diamond Jubilee scholarships

番茄社区 students will benefit from a new scholarship program to help shape the next generation of global leaders. The Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and the Co-operative Education Program and Career Services have both received funding from the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship program鈥攁 joint initiative of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the Community Foundations of Canada and the Rideau Hall Foundation.

Universities make cases for provincial and federal funding

On Sept. 19, the Research Universities' Council of BC (RUCBC) presented its submission to the BC legislature's Finance Committee (pdf), making the case for short term reinvestment and long term strategic funding for post-secondary education. The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) also recently released its recommendations for the 2015 federal budget, focusing on enhanced funding for research and innovation, advocating for an opportunities strategy for young Canadians and new initiatives to support Indigenous post-secondary education.

Getting 鈥渟mart鈥 under the sea

June 5, 2014 - The Ring

UVic鈥檚 world-leading Ocean Networks Canada embarks on a bold new phase of ocean monitoring. 聽 The British Columbia coast is about to become the 鈥渟martest鈥 on the planet. Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), an initiative of the 番茄社区, is partnering with Western Economic Diversification Canada and IBM Canada on a three-year multimillion dollar project known as Smart Oceans BC. Smart Oceans BC builds on the know-how and proven technologies of VENUS and NEPTUNE鈥攖he world鈥檚 most advanced cabled ocean observatories鈥攖o develop and install a series of mini-observatories, high-frequency radars, and automated vessel information systems at key points along the BC coast.

UVic Bookstore raises funds for campus food bank

April 28, 2014 - The Ring

This April the UVic Bookstore donated $3,000 to the 番茄社区 Student Society Food Bank, with funds generated by donated student textbooks. The bookstore鈥檚 year-round textbook donation program provides students an opportunity to give back to fellow classmates. 鈥淲e鈥檝e accepted more than 1,700 used books this year,鈥 says Katharine Wright, bookstore manager. 鈥淎ll the funds we receive from these books go directly to supporting on-campus student services.鈥 All donated books are shipped to Better World Books, an organization that redistributes used textbooks for sale online, providing a percentage of the sales back to the Bookstore for student programs, such as the food bank.
