New funding boosts two UVic proteomics research projects

A project co-led by UVic biochemist Christoph Borchers will use more than $3.8 million in new funding from Genome Canada to make mouse models more powerful and meaningful to the study of health and disease. Also funded is UVic chemist Fraser Hof, who receives $238,800 to investigate 鈥渕ethylation鈥濃攖he smallest form of biochemical control switch.

UVic-led particle physics facility moves closer to completion

October 28, 2016 - The Ring

The UVic-led Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory (ARIEL) at TRIUMF, Canada鈥檚 national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, received $8.7 million from the BC Knowledge Development Fund in October. ARIEL expansion will lead to advances in medical imaging for diseases such as cancer, new technologies and materials for industry, and fresh insights into the fundamental nature of matter.

Funding supports wave energy research

On Oct. 6, the BC Government announced funding to UVic's West Coast Wave Initiative (WCWI) to support research into the potential of ocean waves to generate clean, renewable and affordable electricity. Since its inception in 2009, WCWI has grown to become the centre of Canadian wave energy research and development.

BC investment unlocks national initiative to accelerate discovery and innovation

October 6, 2016 - Media release

The BC government has invested $8.7 million in a UVic-led, national initiative to bolster Canada鈥檚 world-class rare isotope capabilities. The contribution from the BC Knowledge Development Fund supports TRIUMF鈥檚 Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory, a two-phase multidisciplinary research facility that will advance our fundamental understanding of the world in which we live.

UVic chemist Alex Brolo is working with the precious metal to provide a faster (and inexpensive) way to diagnose devastating viruses such as Zika and dengue fever. Brolo is developing new ways to use gold nanostructures in medical applications.

New CIHR funding boosts UVic health research

August 2, 2016 - The Ring

Battling parasite-borne disease and improving family fitness are the goals of two 番茄社区 projects recently awarded funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). With his seven-year, $959,663 foundation grant, exercise psychologist Ryan Rhodes will explore how parental support can move good intentions about exercise into actions for the entire family. UVic biochemist Martin Boulanger will use his five-year $825,000 project grant to continue research into how Apicomplexa鈥攖he group of single-celled parasites that cause toxoplasmosis and severe malaria鈥攊nvade host cells.
