Husband and wife coaching legends Kathy and Ken Shields, who led their teams to a combined 15 national basketball titles at the 番茄社区, accepted honorary doctor of laws degrees from the university at a special convocation ceremony on Thursday morning.
Ken and Kathy Shields, who coached Vikes men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball teams to a combined 15 national championships, will receive honorary degrees from the 番茄社区 at a special convocation ceremony on April 2.
Dr. James Stewart officially has all of his medical bases covered.聽 Already a practicing general surgeon and a father of five, Stewart took on the extraordinary challenge of adding a UVic master鈥檚 degree in Health Information Science (HINF) by distance to his limited free time in January 2009, first studying from Vancouver before moving home to Edmonton six months in.
Chancellor Murray Farmer will preside over a final set of four ceremonies during UVic's Fall Convocation on Nov. 10 and 12. During his six years as chancellor, he has presided over 79 convocation ceremonies, and congratulated and "tapped" more than 鈥
For Kathryn Juricic, a social sciences graduate, getting outside and seeing impacts of local work makes her passionate to continue this after her studies at UVic. Juricic began at UVic with the intention of moving on after her first year; however, after taking some environmental studies courses she didn鈥檛 want to leave. 鈥淚 felt I wouldn鈥檛 receive the same calibre of learning and atmosphere anywhere else. I was surrounded by inspirational people who were bound together through learning and action,鈥 explains Juricic.
Thousands of UVic students and their families and friends will gather on campus this month to celebrate the achievement of an academic milestone. During Fall Convocation on Nov. 10 and 12, ceremonies will be held to confer degrees, diplomas or certificates upon 1,272 graduating students.
The 番茄社区 will celebrate the successful completion of studies for 1,300 graduating students when it holds fall convocation ceremonies on Nov. 10 and 12 at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day in the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium. 鈥

Poet Patrick Lane and Harvard University chemist George Whitesides will receive honorary degrees from UVic during the Fall 2013 convocation ceremonies, Nov. 12 and 13, in the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium.
During the convocation ceremony on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m., 番茄社区 President Jamie Cassels, QC, will be sharing the stage with students鈥攕everal of whom he taught as a professor in UVic's Faculty of Law. Cassels will stand before his students as a locally and nationally recognized legal scholar and teacher, and he will also be publicly and officially recognized as a different kind of leader: UVic's seventh president and vice-chancellor.
