Clean energy projects at UVic get a $2.4M boost

November 16, 2017 - Media release

$2.4 million in new clean energy funding from the Government of Canada ($1.4M), and from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation in conjunction with Seaspan ($1M), was announced today, boosting UVic researchers’ ability to accelerate the kinds of solutions-focused, clean energy projects that are making a difference at a local, national and international level.

Energy reduction leads to STARS sustainability gold—again

The McKinnon pool heat recovery system is just one of many initiatives that have helped UVic achieve its second gold rating with the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS). The 2017 score maintains UVic’s gold ranking, originally established in 2014, and makes it the second highest-rated university in Canada.

Funding supports wave energy research

On Oct. 6, the BC Government announced funding to UVic's West Coast Wave Initiative (WCWI) to support research into the potential of ocean waves to generate clean, renewable and affordable electricity. Since its inception in 2009, WCWI has grown to become the centre of Canadian wave energy research and development.

Melina Laboucan, a 33-year-old member of the Lubicon Cree First Nation, came to UVic's Indigenous Governance (IGov) master's program in 2013 with a clear purpose: to develop a solar energy project plan that would tackle Indigenous and environmental issues in her home town of Little Buffalo, Alberta.
