The Mercer Report visits UVic and exercises its brain

On Jan. 16, the Rick Mercer Report launched its final season on CBC. The first episode features the comedian and satirist's visit to UVic campus last fall in which Mercer gets a brainwave assessment in Olav Krigolson's neuroeconomics lab, test-drives a 3D-printed prosthetic at the Victoria Hand Project lab and attempts to sing opera with music prof. Benjamin Butterfield.

Many consider baseball to be one of the most difficult skills in any sport. So, what makes a batter successful? Some think it requires that the athlete be in 鈥渢he zone鈥濃攁 mental state in which performance is optimal. But what is 鈥渢he zone鈥? Can it be quantified? Olav Krigolson, UVic neuroscientist, paired up with Anthony Pluta, a pro-ball-player-turned-grad-student to find out.

UVic neuroscientists get a head start on concussion diagnosis

When a young person hits their head on the ice, on the field or at the pool it can cause damage to the brain. However, current assessment techniques make it difficult for medical practitioners to diagnose a concussion because the tools currently in use are subjective and difficult to interpret. Thanks to $750,000 in new funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the BC Knowledge Development Fund and UVic鈥檚 Division of Medical Sciences, two of Canada鈥檚 top brain injury experts are on the case.
