Seghers Collection book recognized with Alcuin Society award

The Seghers Collection: Old Books for a New World—written by Dr. H&e#180;lène Cazes (French and medieval studies) and published by the University Libraries—has been recognized by the Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. The publication is of special significance for the campus and the Victoria region, exploring the bibliographic history of the Seghers Collection, their spiritual and religious significance within the catholic tradition and their attributed owner, Charles John Seghers (the second Archbishop of Victoria).

Inaugural Engaged Scholar Award recipients announced

Congratulations to Dr. Bernie Pauly of the School of Nursing and Dr. Val Napoleon of the Faculty of Law, who have been named the inaugural recipients of the Provost’s Engaged Scholarship Award. The newly created awards program is intended to support and enhance UVic’s vision for the integration of outstanding scholarship, inspired teaching and real-life, community engagement. It recognizes tenured members of faculty who have achieved great distinction as community engaged scholars.

Engaged scholarship and advocacy worthy of UVic’s highest faculty award

If you don’t know what it means to be named a UVic Distinguished Professor, don’t fret: they’re a rare breed. The newest recipient, Dr. Susan Boyd, is only the 13th UVic professor to receive the award—the highest academic honour UVic can bestow on faculty—since its creation in 2002. Boyd’s activist presence on substantive social justice and marginalization issues has led to a tremendous scholarly output.

Nature, meet nurture: 2014 Staff Sustainability Champion Award

The idea is simple: teach children about the importance of connecting to nature when they’re young, and they’ll grow into environmental leaders. On March 16, Sherri-Lynn Yazbeck and her team at UVic Child Care Services were awarded the 2014 Staff Sustainability Champion Award for their environmental engagement programs. The award was presented by UVic Vice-President Finance and Operations Gayle Gorrill. Yazbeck and her team of educators—Batool Alishan, Ann Pickup and Julia Wilson—provide nature-based learning for children aged 3-5. They promote hands-on learning for issues related to the environment and teach children the importance of environmental stewardship.

Hélène Cazes, Donna Greschner: Local heroes lauded at 10th anniversary of VLAs

On Feb. 26 at the Crystal Garden, over 400 guests celebrated 21 extraordinary nominees in eight award categories at a special 10th anniversary gala of the Victoria Leadership Awards (VLAs). UVic is a founding partner of the annual VLA program. This year, Dr. H&e#180;lène Cazes and Prof. Donna Greschner received the UVic award. A number of the community heroes celebrated last night are either from, or affiliated with, the university.
