Early career award for Tom Gleeson

Dr. Tom Gleeson (engineering) has won the Early Career Award from the Hydrologic Sciences section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) which goes to an international hydrology researcher within six years of their PhD. Gleeson鈥檚 work focuses on mega-scale groundwater systems and groundwater sustainability.

2015 Schulich Leadership Scholars

Two recent high school graduates, from Victoria and Surrey respectively, have been selected to receive this year鈥檚 prestigious Schulich Leadership Scholarship for their undergraduate studies at the 番茄社区. Created in 2011 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, the scholarships聽are awarded annually to 40 students in Canada pursuing undergraduate studies in STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The scholarship for engineering studies is $80,000 and $60,000 for the other areas of study.

A growing appreciation for Indigenous knowledge

Trudeau Foundation award supports Nancy Turner鈥檚 lifelong study of traditional plant use 聽 聽 A long-time champion of Indigenous knowledge, UVic ethnobotanist and ethnoecologist Nancy Turner has devoted her career to understanding and communicating the crucial role that plants play in Indigenous cultures and languages, especially with respect to land use, rights and title. To support this important work the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation has awarded Turner a $225,000 fellowship over the next three years.

BC nursing award for Marjorie MacDonald

Dr. Marjorie MacDonald (nursing) was presented the 2015 award for Excellence in Advancing Nursing Knowledge and Research by the Association of Registered Nurses of BC. This award recognizes nurses who conduct research with demonstrated practical applications, serve as mentors to beginning researchers, promote the application of research findings into nursing practice, and consistently demonstrate excellence, inclusion and innovation in the nursing profession.

Visual arts award includes solo exhibition at Art Gallery of Ontario

Seven months after being named one of eight recipients of the Governor General鈥檚 Awards for Visual and Media Arts, Department of Visual Arts professor Sandra Meigs has been announced as the winner of the $50,000 Gershon Iskowitz Prize at the AGO for 2015. In addition to the cash award, the prize comes with a solo exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario and a further $10,000 towards a publication on Meigs鈥 work.

International award salutes researcher鈥檚 science outreach activities

Paul Zehr remembers the precise moment when his research career shifted gears and science communications became a major part of his activities as a scholar and academic. 鈥淚t was a Friday afternoon in 2007 and I was searching Google Scholar for publication information on one of my papers,鈥 he recalls. He was pondering how many people his work actually affected. His most cited paper at the time had about 150 citations. But what if that meant only 150 people had read it? Was that acceptable impact? 鈥淔or me, the answer was no,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 decided then and there that I wasn鈥檛 satisfied with standard measures of academic productivity and impact and instead wanted to reach larger groups more directly.鈥

UVic physicists share in $3 million Breakthrough Prize

A team of UVic researchers shared in one of the world鈥檚 most lucrative science awards this November. The $3 million 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was awarded to five international experiments, including more than 1,300 individual scientists, 鈥渇or the fundamental discovery of neutrino oscillations, revealing a new frontier beyond, and possibly far beyond, the standard model of particle physics.鈥 Eight current and former Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA) members are among the laureates. 聽 聽聽
