Drs. Cecilia Benoit (sociology), Jay Cullen (earth and ocean sciences) and Andrea Walsh (anthropology) have been named the 2017 recipients of the Provost's Engaged Scholar Award. The award celebrates tenured faculty members who have made significant contributions to community through their integration of outstanding scholarship, inspired teaching and community engagement.

Millennia-spanning forest study garners international environmental award

March 2, 2017 - The Ring

Outstanding research in ecology was announced this week by the Ecological Society of America. A team of UVic researchers and grad students were recognized for their contribution to the fields of plant ecology and biogeography with the William Skinner Cooper Award for their research study, "Intertidal resource use over millennia enhances forest productivity," published in Nature Communications last year.

Indigenous law graduate student wins top Canadian research award

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills received the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award鈥攐ne of its five 鈥淚mpact Awards鈥濃攁t a ceremony in Ottawa today. Mills鈥 work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law, one of the central recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award. The award is given to a single student each year across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Canada whose research "brings forward ideas that help us understand and improve the world around us." Mills' work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law.

Shelagh Rogers recognized for mental health advocacy

November 1, 2016 - The Ring

Chancellor Shelagh Rogers was honoured as the recipient of the Margaret Trudeau Mental Health Advocacy Award, at the fifth annual Mad about Margaret's gala event in Toronto on Oct. 21. The award recognizes individuals whose leadership efforts have been notably effective in advocating for a fruitful and on-going dialogue about mental health issues, and for advancing the needs of people with mental illness to the forefront of national concerns.

Election to the academies of the RSC is Canada's highest academic honour and signals that the scholar, scientist or artist has made remarkable lifelong contributions to their field and to public life.
